WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 5, 2026) — Generations United today launched its year-long 40th-anniversary campaign, 40 Years of Proof. 40 More of Possibility., celebrating what generations have built together and inviting others to help shape what comes next.
Founded on August 5, 1986, Generations United was built on a simple but enduring belief: the future cannot be built one generation at a time. For 40 years, the organization has worked to ensure children, youth, older adults, and families thrive through meaningful intergenerational connections, innovative programs, and policies that strengthen communities.
“This anniversary is more than a celebration of our history,” said Kristen M. Kiefer, Executive Director of Generations United. “It’s an opportunity to recognize what generations have accomplished together and to invite even more people to help build a future where no one has to grow up, grow older, or care alone.”
Throughout the anniversary year, Generations United will share stories from its history, highlight the people and partners who helped build this movement, and welcome new voices and partners.
As part of the campaign, supporters are invited to:
- Share the story. Follow and engage with Generations United’s 40th anniversary campaign across LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram beginning August 5 using #40YearsOfGU. Sharing, commenting, and reposting helps introduce new audiences to the organization’s work.
- Give $40 for 40 years. Honor the anniversary with a symbolic $40 gift to help strengthen families, advance intergenerational solutions, and invest in the next 40 years.
- Explore partnership opportunities. Organizations can join the campaign through a variety of partnership opportunities, from Mission Ally listings to customized Next 40 Partner collaborations, including in-kind support, conference visibility, co-branded recognition, and shared learning opportunities.
For four decades, Generations United has demonstrated that when generations come together, families are stronger, communities are more connected, and lasting change is possible.
The anniversary campaign looks ahead with the same spirit that launched the organization in 1986.
Forty years gives us proof. The next 40 asks what we will do with it. And it will take all of us to build it.
Every Generation. Every Voice. One Future.

About Generations United
Generations United fights for intergenerational connection – from Capitol Hill to the kitchen table. We work with community-based organizations, policymakers, and partners nationwide so that grandparents can raise grandchildren, older adults can age with community instead of without it, and families of every kind do not have to figure it out alone. We envision a future where no one has to grow up, grow older, or care alone – a future where connection is not left to chance, and communities are designed for the way people actually live: together.
