Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring is a proven in-school literacy program that pairs trained older adult volunteers with children in grades K-3 identified by their teachers as at risk because they read below grade level. Tutors work one-on-one with students each week throughout the school year. They meet with their students during the school day and follow the research-based “Six-Step Literacy Approach,” which includes reading aloud, talking/writing together, reading the child’s stories, working with words, books and writing, and review of previous work. The program benefits older adults, children, schools and communities through volunteerism, increased literacy and self-esteem, and community building.
