Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) in Chicago meets the social and housing needs of low-income older people in a model of intergenerational shared living. Most of H.O.M.E.’s residents in two of its buildings are “elder orphans” without family. A dozen low-income seniors build a chosen family around one another with a handful of younger adults (Resident Assistants) and families with children. Seniors and RAs are provided meals, utilities, and household items. RAs assist seniors by cooking on weekends and regular socializing; H.O.M.E.’s staff also helps residents organize events and outings.
