Kendal at Oberlin’s intergenerational program is multifacetedly reaching the larger community of Oberlin and Lorain County featuring an onsite Early Learning Center. Kendal residents and staff play a significant role in mentoring students from more than nine educational institutions. Our community believes in the commitment to mentor the next generation. The Early Learning Center opened at the same time as the Kendal at Oberlin retirement community and focuses on children 18 months – 5 years old. The Center creates opportunities for residents to continue their passion for teaching young children, as well as being with surrogate grandchildren. Keyword: Shared Site

Opening Minds through Art (OMA) is an intergenerational art program for people with dementia. It is grounded in person-centered ethics and founded on the fact that people with dementia are capable of expressing themselves creatively. There is a growing body of empirical evidence that creative expression improves their physical and psychological well-being. The mission of OMA is to build bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art. The program is implemented in group sessions: Up to 12 people with dementia with the assistance of 12 trained volunteers working on a one-to-one basis. The art-making sessions culminate in a gallery exhibition celebrating the artists’ accomplishments while educating the public about the creative capacities of people with dementia.

The Champion Intergenerational Center is such a place, serving older adults, young children, and university students. Operated as a university/community collaboration, the Center offers many benefits to the Center participants, the Near East Side and wider community, and The Ohio State University faculty and students. Within OSU, the initiative is led by the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Social Work. Columbus Early Learning Centers is the early childhood care and education provider and National Church Residences provides adult day services. At Marilyn’s Lifelong Educational Center (MLLEC) children learn through hands on explorations, daily interactions and guidance within a natural family-like environment. Planned hands on explorations are implemented by our teachers and designed to help children learn life skills and gain an academic advantage. Interactions are either planned or qualify as friendly visits with our elder friends throughout Birchaven Retirement Village.

Opportunities are available in the Syracuse City and Liverpool school districts and 18 other U. S. cities. OASIS volunteer tutors are paired with children in grades K-3 who would benefit from a one-on-one mentoring relationship. Tutors are trained to work with kids using a proven approach to literacy that emphasizes reading, talking and writing. They meet with their students at least once a week throughout the school year, providing a caring, supportive environment where reading and language activities, keyed to the child’s interests, spark curiosity and learning.

Residents from the Ivy Lodge Assisted Living (formerly The Family Lodge) join the teacher and families each week for class, making our essential class even more of a community experience. The residents love being with the families and observing the children and the families offer their children a true musical exchange between people of all ages.

History Alive! is Elders Share the Arts intergenerational multi-disciplinary arts residency that works that with youth (12 & up), in and out of school, who may be cut off their own extended family, culture, and heritage; isolated elders who have limited opportunities for creative expression and social engagement; and inner city communities that are often underserved by the mainstream arts network. It employs our Living History Arts methodology – a unique synthesis of oral history, reminiscence and the creative arts.

“Mind” the generation gap by meeting and interviewing someone of another generation, then writing a play inspired by their life stories. Teens age 14-18 and elders age 60 and up are welcome to apply. The session culminates in an invited sharing of work in which participants’ plays are read by professional actors.

They offer uniquely intergenerational programming teams with social adult daycare linking children and seniors. Our Fairport Day Care Center partners with Aaron Manor assisted living facility for intergenerational programming.
