Member Path

Generations United (GU) is grateful for the outpouring of support our members and friends showed to support grandfamilies in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Working with our close partners in Mississippi and Louisiana, GU continues to accept funds to directly pass to provide supports and services to grandfamilies in need as follows:

We met our initial goal to provide grandfamilies housing to 15 families at the grandparent apartment complex in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  We were also able to re-roof a home of a Mississippi caregiver damaged by the storm. There continues to be grandfamilies in need of home repairs.

GU is also accepting funds to work with existing relief efforts, including government and NGOs, to advocate on behalf of the special needs of grandfamilies and guarantee they are included in response plans and efforts.

Finally, GU will continue to fight for grandfamilies by working with federal and state law makers to implement policy changes to ensure adequate support for the families including addressing legal issues that affect grandparents crossing state lines and calling for the full funding of existing housing policy, known as LEGACY, which would provide funding for housing developments for grandfamilies with emphasis in the three states affected by the hurricane.
