The Brookdale National Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP): How States and Local Agencies Can Join the RAPP Network

 

This session will introduce participants to the Brookdale National Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) seed grant initiative and the resources and services it provides.  RAPP has been implemented in local communities across the country and resulted in the provision of direct services to grandparents and other relatives who are the primary caregivers of children in 44 states.

Engaging Undergraduate Faculty and Students in Aging

 

Demographic and workforce patterns suggest a potential aging workforce crisis. One strategy to interest undergraduate students in career opportunities with older adults is encouraging faculty to infuse aging content. This research presents findings of an exploratory study of undergraduate faculty interest in aging, teaching techniques and college community service projects.

Food Related Intergenerational Discussion Group Experiences

 

FRIDGE is a new 16-20 hour curriculum developed by Penn State Cooperative Extension to help youth and their parents and grandparents to work as partners to achieve their health eating goals.  Hands-on activities help make family communication about food easier, more fun, and more likely to lead to healthier eating.

Grandmothers in Grandfamilies: A Conceptual Framework of Relationship Changes Over Time

 

This qualitative study resulted in development of a model to conceptualize the relationships between grandmothers and the grandchildren they are raising.  A three-phase model including the phases of rescuer/protector, caregiver/provider and mother/advocate are discussed.  Parenting strategies during the mother/advocate phase are discussed.  Implications of the research for the assisting grandfamilies are noted.

Intergenerational Community Music Outreach Programs

 

Dr. Carpenter facilitates intergenerational music outreach programs in schools and senior centers. Her doctoral thesis documented the city wide intergenerational music program in Canberra Australia. She presently facilitates an intergenerational music program at Lavelle School for the Blind and a retirement home in the Bronx NY.

Introduction to Intergenerational Digital Storytelling

 

Digital Clubhouse Network Founder and President Warren C. Hegg and two youth leaders from the Silicon Valley and New York City Digital Clubhouses will present examples of intergenerational digital storytelling projects that have been featured in the international media and archived in more than 30 museums around the world, including the Library of Congress and the National Museum of American History. Attendees will receive handouts and web sites describing the DCN’s award winning methodology to empower them to introduce this powerful programming to their community.
