Our Impact

Generations United is a proven, effective advocate for children, youth and older adults in communities and in Washington, DC.

Founded in 1986 by leaders at the National Council on Aging, Child Welfare League of AmericaChildren’s Defense Fund and AARP, Generations United connects advocates for children and advocates for older adults, to develop a common agenda, forge new partnerships, and educate and empower leaders in the field.

Twenty five years later we are still working diligently in the pursuit of those goals. The 25 Faces of Generations United

Generations United:

  • Built a unified coalition of groups from the children's, disability and older adult communities around strengthening Social Security, culminating in a Social Security For All Generations Call-In Day in 2010 that resulted in more than 4,600 calls to lawmakers stressing the importance of this vital intergenerational program.
  • Grew our Seniors4Kids initiative, which empowers older adults in four states to be advocates for children, into a political powerhouse with 4,000 contacts with legislators and 540 Captains4Kids in 2010.
  • Recognized and championed excellence among intergenerational shared sites through an annual awards competition that celebrated 15 award winning programs and 30 national finalists since 2008.
  • Led the push to pass Fostering Connections, groundbreaking legislation signed by President Bush in 2008 that helps grandparents and other relatives more easily care for children.
  • Created and maintains the National Center on Grandfamilies and the National Center on Intergenerational Shared Sites, both national resources for practitioners, policy makers, and families.
